Many horror fans complain about the lack of original horror coming out of the states these days. But what’s disappointing to me is that when a big studio tries to actually have the guts to release something new horror fans don’t bother to show up, “Grindhouse” being the greatest example of this trend. So here we are and we get a tremendously original horror film that’s not a remake, not a sequel, it comes out in 2000 theaters, from a major studio, and again, no one bothers to show up. Is every great original horror film destined to only be a “cult classic”?? What the hell people??
As of June 5th, Vincenzo Natali’s “Splice” has made a considerably weak $2.7 million at the American box office, by contrast “A Nightmare On Elm Street” (2010) made $15 million on its first day back in April. Now I’m not going to sit here and validate “Splice” and damn “NOES”, because as I’ve grown older I’m starting to realize that remakes of horror films have been around since the days of Hammer and that these films simply aren’t made for me, the older horror film fan, and I should just try and enjoy them for what they are, mindless dumb entertainment for teenagers.
